Glenville/CANA
In July, 2003 the Center for Appalachian Network Access (CANA) initiated a pilot project to deliver wireless broadband connectivity to Glenville, WVa. During the summers of 2003 and 2004, Carnegie-Mellon University faculty and students lived in Glenville and set up wirless broadband in the community. The aim was to meet the increasing need of students and local businesses to have access to high-speed Internet. This collaboration among Glenville, CANA and Carnegie Mellon is producing positive results, and this partnership will ultimately bring wireless broadband access into rural communities where once it wasn’t feasible.
The pilot project, done in conjunction with Glenville State College, has served as a living laboratory to showcase rural broadband access and use. The project now has expanded to the Braxton Gilmer Research Zone.
